A couple grieving their son encounter an ancient terror drawn in this hauntingly atmospheric work of psychological horror from Dutch creator Kriek (The Exile). Seeking a fresh start after the death of their son, Hugh and Sara take up residence in a farmhouse formerly inhabited by Hugh’s great-uncle. Their new home offers a carriage house that Sara can use as a studio to restart her career as an artist, space for Erik to plan his next architectural project, and some old diaries that Hugh’s great-uncle left behind, filled with cryptic writing and drawings of ancient runes. There are runes carved into some of the trees around the property, too. The more Sara studies the runes, the more eerie visions she experiences, and the more she’s drawn to a mysterious pit out in the woods. But is there actually anything supernatural at work here, or is Sarah experiencing hallucinations caused by the intensity of her grief? Kriek’s deft use of color and heavy brush line results in images both breathtakingly gorgeous and uncommonly unsettling.
VERDICT Kriek’s latest is an immersive fever dream that readers are likely to find lingering in their minds for quite some time.
