Rea’s (Lucy on the Wild Side) rom-com strands two inept people on Isle Royale, MI, with hilarious romantic results. Type-A Emily worries constantly and enjoys her safe, bookish life. Fulfilling her father’s dying wish, she books a hiking trip on the island to spread his ashes. Her hunky guide, Ryder, quickly gets them lost, revealing that he is not the expert outdoorsman he pretended to be. His deceased brother was the pro in their declining tour company, while Ryder handled marketing, until desperation drove him to take this job. Stuck together in a wilderness they’re not prepared for, Emily and Ryder encounter unhinged archaeologist Killian, who’s on the island to steal a long-lost diamond. After witnessing Killian’s murder of a colleague, Ryder and Emily find themselves on the run from the archaeologist and his menacing henchmen. Constant obstacles and poor choices lead to a comedy of errors but also bring Emily and Ryder closer. Narrators Andrew Eiden and Emily Lawrence bring pitch-perfect sarcasm and heart to the two hapless heroes while nailing Killian’s Scottish accent and several other distinct voices.
VERDICT An over-the-top, slow-burn romance full of adventure and heart, perfect for fans of The Lost City movie.
