In this compelling and often humorous mystery (in spite of the subject), Philadelphia murder detective Teaghan "Tea" Beaumont is painfully (emotionally and physically) back at work after giving birth to her son. In her absence, an outbreak of familicide has terrorized the city. When she and her longtime partner Ernesto Diaz examine the latest crime scene, Tea senses something is off, but she can't quite grasp it. After Ernesto, his wife, and three kids become victims, Tea knows it's not a murder-suicide. The charming glimpses of the City of Brotherly Love, Tea's home life, her husband, and her delight at new motherhood add warmth. Most enjoyable is sharing her mental processes as she ferrets out the murderer. It is still a shock when the perpetrator is revealed despite their occasionally speaking directly to listeners. Narrator Fred Berman is splendid as the appealing and dedicated Tea Beaumont; excellent with flawed Ernesto, with his Philly-Latino accent; and best as the killer!
VERDICT Another winner in Patterson's series.
