Hal Jordan’s sabbatical from the Green Lantern Corps ends abruptly when intergalactic fugitives take refuge on Earth. After corralling the convicts, Hal begins his investigation into how they escaped, which reveals a mercenary army called the Blackstars is developing a weapon powerful enough to threaten the entire galaxy. Hal’s hunt for these new foes and their leader, the mysterious Controller Mu, is complicated when the Earth is shrunken, stolen, and put up for auction before an audience of the most depraved villains in existence. In a neat twist, locating the stolen planet turns out to be much easier than convincing the populace they’re better off without an alien overlord. Facing disgrace in the aftermath of that adventure, Hal is recruited by the Blackstars—assuming he survives their initiation ritual, a trek across the aptly named Vorr, Planet of Vampires.
VERDICT Sharp’s (The Brave and The Bold: Batman and Wonder Woman) illustrations suggest legendary comics artist Neal Adams paying homage to surrealist painter H.R. Giger (or vice versa). Morrison’s (Batman by Grant Morrison Omnibus, Vol. 2) script mixes police procedural thriller plot points with mind-boggling sf concepts. Not to be missed. Collecting Issues 1–6 of a new ongoing series.
