Cathryn’s charming debut asks, “What’s a person to do if their best friend breaks up with them?” Fallon Monroe is an almost 40-year-old mom who is starting a chocolate business, adores self-help books, and now is trying to figure out why her bestie of seven years has ghosted her and why the rest of her mom friends are turning against her. As she tries to repair the relationships, she realizes that people come into one’s life for “a reason, a season, or a lifetime.” As Fallon deals with mom-drama and addresses long-standing (and largely ignored) challenges from her past, she has to figure out who she is and what her priorities are. Brenda Scott Wlazlo’s narration is a perfect tonal match for the novel. Initially, the pace may seem slow, but it soon becomes apparent that it is in tune with the story’s message, to slow down and reflect. Cathryn’s narrative about an oft-experienced but little-discussed situation will surely strike a chord.
VERDICT Cathryn’s thought-provoking debut may be billed as a “mom-com,” but one need not be a mom to appreciate it. A sure bet for fans of Jennifer Weiner.
