Sf, alternative worlds, and creepy, sentient creatures combine in this mind-blowing work that begins innocently enough with a couple of girls who like to explore looking for cryptids—mysterious animals, such as the Loch Ness monster, Yeti, etc. They go to Bodwin Moor to search for a monster reported there, but while investigating one of the girls disappears. Four years later, she reappears but no one knows where she has been or to where she’s returned. She seems different—stronger and more powerful than the girl who disappeared. The worldbuilding appears to be based on hard science. Creatures have begun to cross over from other worlds and the characters, including an MI5 agent, a shady businessman, and a trans mathematician, are in a race to find out why the monsters have appeared and if they can be stopped.
VERDICT Meticulous and spectacular worldbuilding make this slow-building sf novel a truly fascinating read.
