The Crown in Vogue

Published to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee marking the 70th year of the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II, British Vogue’s compilation of covers, feature stories, photographs, and illustrations from the magazine’s archives chronicles Britain’s royal family for a span of more than a century. Photographers such as Cecil Beaton, Lord Snowdon, and Mario Testino captured royal portraits across the decades, and many of those featured may be new to American audiences. Photographic historian Muir, a contributing editor with the magazine, and literary and royal historian Ross (Jane Austen and her World) have assembled early Vogue articles about the royal family that seem breathlessly exuberant today. Highlights include Afua Hirsch’s article “The Meaning of Meghan,” published after the Duchess of Sussex’s nuptials to Prince Harry in 2018, that addresses racism in Britain. An article by the current British Vogue editor Edward Enninful discusses sustainable fashion with then Prince Charles, and Meghan Markle guest-edited a “Forces of Change” issue.
