OrangeReviewStarCarol Hill (Wales), Christine Wilson-Symthe (Ireland), Mavis MacDonald (Scotland), and Annie Parker (England) make up the WISE Enquiry Agency. A lack of income is posing a serious threat to their equanimity until Henry Twyst, the 18th Duke of Chellingworth, hires them to come to Wales to probe his mother's claims that she saw a corpse in her dining room. Henry's convinced his mother is dotty. Annie goes undercover in the village; Mavis moves in with the Dowager Duchess; Christine visits Henry, who is her friend, at the manor house; and Carol, eight months pregnant, stays in London to coordinate their investigation. Could the theft of the duke's valuable antique dentures collection be related to the dead body discovered in the wood?
VERDICT The author of the Cait Morgan mysteries (The Corpse with the Emerald Thumb) launches a gratifying contemporary series in the traditional British manner with hilarious repercussions (dead bodies notwithstanding). Cozy fans will anticipate learning more about these WISE ladies.
