UNITE is an organization that seeks to heal divisions that fracture humanity. This book, edited by UNITE founder Shriver (Fully Alive: Discovering What Matters Most) and co-founder Rosshirt, is a statement of that effort placed within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The collection brings together brief one- and two-page narratives from a variety of contributors, each offering a sense of vulnerability, hope, and courage for people navigating grief and tumult. Many of the contributors are well-known, such as President George W. Bush and Julia Roberts; others are notable within their communities, including pioneering pastor Jacqui Lewis, and Arthur Brooks of the Harvard Business School. One of the most moving passages is from Amanda Kloots, on the death of her husband, Nick Cordero, from COVID-19 in July 2020. There are also some wonderful photographs throughout, depicting how the pandemic has forever altered society. The compilation is international in scope, featuring voices from China, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and more.
VERDICT Readers seeking practical or spiritual comfort and inspiration, or as the title suggests, a call to unite through action, will find here a plentiful resource of prayers, poems, and other artistic expressions as a balm for difficult times.
