Two high school track stars were once close brothers at their competitive best. Now Sean is divorced, broke in New Orleans, and estranged from older sibling Michael “Kick” Kenney, who stayed home in New Jersey and became a successful investment banker and family man. Their sister Katie convinces Sean to come home after telling him their father has died. It turns out, however, that Kick, who was last seen at a hotel on his birthday, is the deceased. The family accepts police claims that Kick died by suicide, but Sean isn’t convinced. He begins questioning everyone’s motives and circumstances and methodically starts his own investigation. Plot twists introduce lesser players who flesh out the story and keep this cat-and-mouse game going till its surprising end. Throughout it all, Sean will need to hold fast to his track coach’s words of advice: “Legs fast; mind faster; heart unstoppable.” Narrator Stacy Carolan offers an assured and animated performance, drawing listeners into Sean’s psyche and keeping the tension high as the twisty events unfold.
VERDICT Part murder mystery, part family drama, Mitzner’s (Love Betrayal Murder) latest features compelling narration, with distinctly resonant voices and top-notch pacing.
