Doetsch delivers another compelling and complex thriller: a “stand-alone sequel” to The 13th Hour. Nick Quinn has a loving wife and daughter, but during a party on the Fourth of July, terrorists blow up a dam and kill most of the people there. Before Nick dies, he’s given a pocket watch by a friend. It’s no ordinary pocket watch: it can propel its owner two hours back in time so they can live an hour over again. The watch gives Nick the opportunity to stop the attack and save everyone, but trying to fix events is playing with fate, and it appears to make things worse rather than better. And one of the terrorists has a pocket watch of his own.
VERDICT The twists and turns are nonstop, and knowledge of the previous book is not necessary to enjoy this thrill ride. Doetsch’s previous novels have been both high concept and imaginative, and this one is no exception. Nothing in the novel is predictable, and readers who enjoy the work of Blake Crouch will find a new favorite author.
