DEBUT Sage is a professional surfer living in a future where fans can experience the surfing of their idols through virtual reality. Thalassa is a planet that boasts the largest waves in the galaxy and uncharted oceans. Sage initially intends to ride these waves; beat her biggest competitor, Milo; and reclaim her fan base, which has dwindled since her brutal surfing accident. She hopes these accomplishments will also ease the loneliness of losing her father to a mission on Thalassa years ago, and being estranged from the rest of her traditional Hawaiian family. However, things take a turn when Sage and Milo discover uncharted oceans on Thalassa are home to undiscovered lifeforms, revealing Milo not only is her biggest competition, but has ill intentions for this planet with incredible life. Sage must work hard to protect this planet, and the living creatures on it.
VERDICT A unique form of sf focusing on the beauty of nature, ecosystems, and marine biology. The book is a little slow on the action, which may lose some readers. And though well intentioned, the introduction comes off as another white male striving to tell women to be stronger leaders.
