Snakes Eyes: Deadgame

G.I. Joe’s most popular and enigmatic member takes center stage in this globe-hopping action extravaganza with a story and illustration by Liefeld (Deadpool: Bad Blood), in collaboration with Bowers (X-Men: Summers and Winters). When Snake Eyes discovers that a seemingly immortal sorcerer called the Grave Master is seeking a series of mythical weapons, the black-clad warrior embarks upon a quest to stop him. Fans have been debating Liefeld’s merit as a storyteller for three decades at this point, and while it’s blatant that the plot here ultimately amounts to little more than a series of thinly connected fight scenes, it’s impossible to deny the raw energy displayed as Snake Eyes hurtles into action against an onslaught of enemies including a mysterious woman from his past, a gigantic polar bear, and an even more gigantic snake, legions of zombies, the Norse God of Thunder, and many more.
VERDICT A beloved character on a high-stakes solo mission, with friends and enemies like Roadblock, Scarlett, and Storm Shadow appearing along the way to lend a hand and deliver unbelievably hardboiled exposition. This one might not be to everyone’s taste, but G.I. Joe fans are in for a treat.
