When Coulter McKendrick is injected with a deadly experimental biotoxin during an assignment, the first person he goes to for help is his ex-fiancée, Dr. Marena Dash. Though she’s hung up her lab coat for a shopkeeper’s apron, Marena was part of the team who developed the original serum that the new bioweapon is based on. Marena knows she must put her heartache aside, since she is the only person who could possibly create the antidote that will save Coulter. With more than one shadowy group desperate to find both Coulter and the biotoxin, though, she is truly racing against the clock to save the man she still loves before it is too late.
VERDICT Despite the tension its title promises, Dodson (King of Hyde Park) never quite delivers on its pulse-pounding premise. The bad guys feel like little more than caricatures, and the bulk of the heroine’s work to save the hero appears off page. Uneven pacing makes this one more frustrating than satisfying to read.
