DEBUT Medina’s debut blends mystery and Indigenous American mythologies to great effect, as a young woman searches for her sister and the others who have gone missing from their reservation. Anna and Grace Horn are members of the Takoda tribe in Louisiana. Anna can’t wait to be done with high school and spends her days trying to capture the lore and history of her people. But her plans are derailed when her younger sister Grace goes missing. Grace isn’t the first, nor, as Anna knows, will she be the last. The horror that plagues the reservation has existed for generations, and Anna is determined to find out what has happened to her sister and all the other girls and women who have been taken.
VERDICT Though the Takoda tribe is not a real one, the author has based it on existing Indigenous nations, and the crimes against Indigenous women in the book are sadly realistic. But it’s the importance of stories, and who gets to keep and tell them, that’s at the heart of Medina’s gothic mystery.
