Simon & Schuster's new "Pulp History" series seeks to bring to life daring true adventures in history for general readers, aiming for both accuracy and excitement. This entry is about secret agents working in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). Kamiya (cofounder, Salon) focuses on the dangerous activities of various men and women—there is not much about all the boring high-level bureaucratic discussions back in London. The segments on individual agents are only a few pages each, with many of Smith's (foundation & illustration, Art Ctr. Coll. of Design) dramatic illustrations reminiscent of those in graphic novels.
VERDICT The whole book has a popular, quick-read feel to it, as no-doubt intended, making it best for getting YA students and general readers enthused about history. Fuller accounts of this particular subject can be found in David Stafford's Secret Agent: The True Story of the Covert War Against Hitler. Public and school libraries should consider.
