Custodio (Ohio State Univ. education program specialist) and O’Loughlin (Ohio. State Univ. federal grants subject matter expert) are educational consultants and the coauthors of Students with Interrupted Formal Education. They have collaborated again to give pedagogically sound advice deeply rooted in their knowledge of the changing educational landscape in the United States for immigrant students. This book focuses primarily on immigrant students in third grade and up (“newcomers” are defined as those who have been in the United States for fewer than two years) , paying special attention to the barriers that impact these students’ performance. Designed to create classrooms capable of supporting multicultural learners, their book provides valuable insights into the reasoning behind their clear, actionable steps to ensure equitable outcomes for all learners. The book’s program designs and implementation models are grounded in evidence-based practices, all research-driven and created to give educators examples of collaborative efforts that address all aspects of youths’s ecosystems.
VERDICT Highly academic in tone, this book will be a valuable resource for educators as communities continue to become more diverse and see more immigration. It’s also a good reference point for administrations that are looking for strong data points to support their programs.
