Buratovich (biology, Spring Arbor Univ.; Cancer) and almost 250 contributors (mostly academics) offer a wide-ranging though somewhat disappointing look at women’s health. More than 300 signed, alphabetically arranged entries tackle reproduction (conception, pregnancy, Apgar scores), illness (cancer, stroke, heart disease) and prevention (nutrition, exercise, analgesic), psychology (depression, addiction, sexuality), and sociology (divorce, violence, aging). Each entry includes a general category assignment, such as anatomy, social issues, or treatment), as well as key terms, an overview, and a bibliography. The introduction states that a number of articles have appeared elsewhere. Some summaries refer to missing tables (“Abuse of the Elderly”), and article bibliographies are uneven in their timeliness (e.g., for abdomen, most recent resources are dated 2012). Article lengths vary greatly, and shorter entries would have benefitted from further information. There are no cross-references between entries, nor see-also references in the general index.
VERDICT The same information and more can be found in the latest edition of The Merck Manual and specific titles, such as Chandrima Biswas’s Pregnancy Encyclopedia.
