When an unknown event causes rage to take over the country, mayhem erupts as the afflicted begin to murder their neighbors. As power grids fail, the names of those to be murdered are read off on the radio. When Jack Colclough hears his name, his family becomes a target. Jack and his wife, son, and daughter flee Albuquerque, facing many dangers, in a desperate attempt to survive. Crouch’s (Dark Matter) recently rereleased debut may be short on character development, but it delivers plenty of action and thrills. Scott Brick provides a grim, no-frills narration of a man desperate to survive and protect his family. From the moment the main character flees, through the action-packed middle and the climax, Brick’s narration keeps listeners riveted as horror after horror unfolds. Brick’s performance matches the book’s taut pacing, highlighting Jack’s grit and determination in the face of unimaginable circumstances.
