Sarah Beauhall had been seeing some normalcy in her life, even in her role as dragon slayer. She has her love, Katie, and their newly adopted daughter, Jai Li. Things are quiet—until they attend the birthday party of one of Katie’s former colleagues, where Ginny Price celebrates her day by leaping off the balcony to her death. As more suicides take place in Bellingham, WA, Sarah and her crew face mercenaries and witches invading their home with cryptic messages from long-dead gods. When a path to a long-lost world opens, Sarah must take the fight to the other side, and face physical and emotional challenges she has never before. Pitts’s world of “Norse mythology meets Washington state” stars a strong blacksmith-turned-dragon killer, with a myriad of supporting characters that create an emotion-laden found family around her.
VERDICT After four years, Pitts (Night Terrors) brings a rich urban fantasy setting back. This novel is filled with action and delightful characters. Readers will definitely want to start at the beginning of the series to understand the breadth of the mythos.
