There’s no doubt, the photographs in this appealing little book will creep into readers’ hearts immediately and cause them to succumb to an irresistible urge to call a breeder or visit a shelter and adopt a puppy! Scott, an extremely talented photographer and author of Forever Home, follows six litters of puppies from their births to age eight weeks, when most leave their homes for life with new families. Scott portrays Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Daniffs (Great Danes/Mastiff mixes), English Setters, Great Pyrenees, Labrador Retrievers, and a mixed-breed litter week-by-week, showing the pups’ physical, intellectual, and emotional development. Despite the size differences in the puppies, there are close to identical patterns of progress in development and so the text is fairly repetitive from litter to litter.
VERDICT While the book is a visual delight, the accompanying text misses the mark. Recommended for inclusive collections or for breed fanciers.
