The story is a familiar one; Robin Hood roams the Greenwood with his band of merry men and women to save his lady Marian from the evil that has befallen her. What makes this version of Robin’s story refreshingly different is the way that it blends the political situation in England in the years before the Magna Carta with not just Robin’s familiar story but also the legends of the Green Man and Herne the Hunter. This time, the evil is not just the Sheriff of Nottingham but also a sorcerer who bound Marian in an eternal sleep, while Robin is cursed to live forever as the fae Robin Goodfellow. The Green Man is locked in a struggle of his own, which adds to plot development and leaves Robin and company to fend for themselves against a force that threatens the forest they all call home.
VERDICT Readers know and love the legend of Robin Hood, making this book (and Walk the Wild with Me, the first in Atwood’s series) a marvelous addition to the lore of the Greenwood. A real treat for readers looking for stories of wild places in the real world or who simply love Robin Hood in all his forms.
