OrangeReviewStarEvan Smoak returns in another rousing "Orphan X" story from Hurwitz. The Orphan program, a Bourne-like secret project hidden in the U.S. Department of Defense, involves children recruited from orphanages to be trained as snipers and operatives in secret missions. This latest picks up speed immediately in the aftermath of the killing of Evan's mentor in Hellbent, and is darkened by Evan's desire for revenge. His target is President Jonathan Bennett, who, as secretary of defense, assigned Evan his first mission as Orphan X—a mission, unbeknownst to Evan, that was undertaken for Bennett's personal benefit. Bennett has now enlisted Orphan A to kill all the remaining former agents in the Orphan program in order to hide his involvement.
VERDICT Fans of the previous books in the series will not want to miss this latest installment featuring a complicated, swift-paced plot involving numerous twists plus a surprise ending—the essentials that make up a great thriller. Enthusiasts of suspense dramas should plan to stay up all night reading this one. [See Prepub Alert, 7/2/18.]
