Whereas She Who Knows, the first book in this trilogy, was a prequel to Okorafor’s award-winning 2010 novel Who Fears Death, in this second series installment Najeeba’s story becomes a sequel dealing with her life after her daughter’s immense sacrifice changed their world. A change which no one remembers except Najeeba, now faced with a world that does not remember what came before. This is the story of her going one way, forward into the future, and how she handles living with memories that are shared by no one, even as she picks up the threads of the powers she left behind in her tragically interrupted youth. Fans of Okorafor’s work will recognize similar themes here as in her 2007 novel Shadow Speaker.
VERDICT A coming-into-power story that will be highly appreciated by She Who Knows readers or anyone looking for more set in the world of Who Fears Death, recently optioned by HBO. Also a good pick for fans of Tobi Ogundiran and Suyi Davies Okungbowa.
