After a stint of fruitless job hopping, Annie Radford takes a position at her alma mater, making video content for the college basketball team. After a traumatic event prompted her abrupt departure from college, Annie swore that she’d never return. Now, however, she’s just hoping to supplement her résumé and move on. Upon arriving, Annie is surprised when it appears that Ben, a former classmate, bears her a grudge. As the basketball season heats up, the two are increasingly drawn to each other, even though they are soon forced to reckon with the past. Harrow’s debut balances romance with an exploration of issues affecting college sports, including sexual misconduct and abuse of power. Narrator Kyla Garcia offers an expressive performance, deftly shifting between romantic and somber tones. Her depiction of sarcastic, down-on-her-luck Annie strikes a chord, and her portrayal of Annie’s and Ben’s voices keeps the banter lively and distinct. The accents of coaches from different parts of the country are clear and accurate, but that of Ben’s mother, who is described as having a Pennsylvania accent, doesn’t come across.
VERDICT A thoughtful enemies-to-lovers romance, recommended for the ever-growing number of sports romance fans.
