Lady Delilah Montebank is horrified when her mother delivers an ultimatum: secure a proposal or marry homebody Clarence Hilton. In a fit of anger, Delilah declares that not only will she secure a proposal from the Duke of Branville, the most eligible bachelor of the Season, but she will do it in one month’s time, before her 23rd birthday. Having been in love with Delilah since they were teens, her best friend Thomas, the Duke of Huntley, is devastated when he learns of her plans. Yet things with Branville aren’t going as Delilah had hoped, and with time running out to win his affection, she does the unthinkable and purchases a love potion. Unfortunately, she sprinkles it on the wrong man, and realizing what she’s done, she fears she’s made a terrible mistake.
VERDICT With a plot loosely based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this latest installment of the “Playful Brides” (e.g., The Unexpected Duchess) will be enjoyed by many Regency romance readers and fans of the series, especially with the inclusion of characters from the previous novels. Others, however, may grow frustrated with a conflict that feels contrived and the drawn-out miscommunication between our lovers.
