Dedicated baseball historian Carlin (Banjo: An Illustrated History) organizes his ballpark entries geographically (NYC area; Western New York State; the Northern Tier), preceded by a brief history of the sport and his guidelines for defining a “lost” ballpark (its baseball organization must be defunct and have paid its players and charged admission). For each ballpark, he lists diamond size, years of operation, costs, notable players, fun facts, and historical context as available. Most entries have illustrations. The book includes venues for Black and women’s leagues and uses now-outdated team descriptors (e.g., Colored League) for accuracy. Includes 10 maps, although ballpark locations can only be approximated.
VERDICT A fascinating niche option for New York–area libraries and baseball history fans everywhere.
