Wolf’s timely debut has it all—a funny and relatable heroine, wrenching grief and loss, and a community of true-blue friends. At 30, Zoe Greene’s life isn’t turning out as planned. She married her high school sweetheart, graduated from Yale Law, found a solid job in Chicago, and is happily expecting her first child. But then, heartbreaking events lead to her divorcing her husband, undergoing an abortion, and cautiously (and hilariously) reentering the dating world. Narrator Cady Zuckerman provides a pitch-perfect presentation of wounded but resilient Zoe, capturing her warmth and wittiness as well as her deep-seated sorrow and rage. As the book progresses, listeners will be able to hear Zoe’s wholly affecting evolution from shell-shocked to hopeful. Zuckerman’s characterizations are outstanding, including a wide range of less-than-wonderful dating prospects—a distressingly cheerful and fast-moving rabbi, a hot but distant Irish lawyer, and the single dad who isn’t quite ready for a relationship.
VERDICT Wolf’s engaging writing, combined with Zuckerman’s flawless narration, is a winning combination. Fans of Jennifer Weiner and Jane Green will be enchanted.
