Accountant-turned-baker Emma Reed returns for a second outing in the “Chatty Corgi” mystery series (after A Cold Nose for Murder), along with her coworkers at the Cornwall B&B and her talking Corgi named Oliver. The B&B is excited to cater the annual festival hosted by the Daphne du Maurier Literary Society at short notice, but their meeting with the society’s board is unexpectedly tense. Accusations of mismanagement and personal animosities arise, much to the discomfort of Emma and her friends. The situation becomes even more stressful when the B&B crew arrive at the family estate of one of the board members and find her body in the drive. Warned by the police to stay out of the investigation, Emma and Oliver nevertheless receive a personal plea from the victim’s niece to get to the bottom of it. Family secrets are revealed, and the local gossip mill goes into overdrive, while Emma tries to solve a murder and prepare for the biggest job of her new career.
VERDICT Fans of dog-centric cozy mysteries will thoroughly enjoy this charming crime-solving duo and the enchanting Cornish setting.
