Crochet-doll designer Mitrani (Crochet Iconic Women) offers 15 more patterns for making dolls in the likenesses of of contemporary women (Dolly Parton; Misty Copeland) and historical figures (Josephine Baker; Harriet Tubman; Anne Frank). There are detailed instructions on how to make figures of each of these groundbreaking women. Patterns are easy to follow and clearly explained. When special techniques are needed, such as joining legs or creating armholes, the technique glossary provides additional instructions, often with pictures. Interspersed throughout the book are words of wisdom from the women themselves as well as a short biography of each. Two of the dolls, Wangari Maathai and Mary Shelley, include props (a little tree; a miniature Frankenstein) to crochet as well. There’s a small mistake in which one stitch doesn’t add up properly in a pattern, but experienced crocheters will be able to easily work around it. Crocheters with experience making amigurumi will love this book and will likely want to make every iconic woman featured in it. One third of these 15 women are people of color, so there’s hope that volume three of this series will increase that percentage even more.
VERDICT A charming, fun book that is recommended for crochet collections.
