One summer night, meteorites shower down all across the earth. One lands in a pasture owned by Alden Baylor, boosting the sensitive orphaned teen boy’s social standing around town, leading to a sweet romance with a girl named Maya. But dealing with the machinations of academics and government agencies eager to study the meteorite proves less enjoyable, especially after Alden discovers that his meteorite is in fact the vessel of an extraterrestrial being, now trapped on Earth. Readers rolling their eyes at the thought of yet another melodramatic tale about a lonesome boy forming an intense emotional bond with an adorable alien visitor, take heart—Alden’s alien is extremely creepy and not particularly friendly. In fact, as additional aliens begin to appear at the sites of meteorite strikes around the world, it seems more and more like Alden might be harboring a scout sent in advance of an invading army. This updated hardcover edition of the 2014 sci-fi graphic novel includes 20 new pages of story.
VERDICT Jarrell’s (Teen Titans Go! Roll With It!) realistic, occasionally moody illustration creates a sense of gritty realism that’s perfectly matched to Parker’s (Warlord of Mars Attacks) cleverly subversive script in this surprising, emotionally resonant science-fiction coming-of-age story.
