Mackintosh puts you in Anna Johnson's head as she reels from the shock of her parents' apparent suicides a month apart. A year later, however, Anna's life is upended again when she receives anonymous notes saying that her parents were murdered. Narrators Gemma Whelan and author Mackintosh read the story at an even pace that is easy to follow along. However, the lack of intonation and change of voice can make it difficult to determine which character is speaking. While Mackintosh's writing offers strong character descriptions and plot events, the narration leaves the dialog flat.
VERDICT Though the plot is engaging, this would be a better choice in print. ["While not as gripping as Mackintosh's previous books, there is an innate need in this novel to know what happens. Readers will also draw parallels to other authors famous for their plot twists, such as Ruth Ware and Gillian Flynn": LJ Xpress Reviews 2/2/18 review of the Berkley hc.]
