Kiss & Tell: Stand Up & Stories About Love, Sex, Etc

S. & S. Audio. Sept. 2022. 3:54 hrs. ISBN 9781797121802. $19.99. HUMOR
Coproduced by Simon & Schuster Audio and Kevin Hart’s media company, Hartbeat, this audiobook original is high on prestige and low on laughs. If only Hart himself had stepped behind the mic to deliver a 10-minute routine, there would have been at least twice as many laughs than can be found in this 90-minute program. This is a live recording of a roster of 18 up-and-coming comedians, stand-up artists, singers, and storytellers talking about dating, love, relationships, marriage, and kids. Hosts Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live) introduce the new talents and offer weak comedic banter between sets. There are some laughs along the way. “My experience with threesomes runs parallel to my experience with M. Night Shyamalan movies,” says Zach Noe Towers, “in that the first one was so enthralling, I didn’t even notice one of the guys was dead the whole time.” Sydney Battle remembers accidentally catfishing her entire friend group, and Nate Jackson shines with his tight 15-minute spot, starting with, “Tinder is not set up for men. They think we care about the bio.”
VERDICT The performers often laugh louder at their weak and meandering material than the live audience. A strictly optional purchase.
