Maseo Kaytu’s squad is an odd group of misfits. Yanked from their well-deserved furlough, this battle-tested infantry squad is pulled for emergency deployment into space to fight a lethal enemy. Their mission is to go behind enemy lines and retrieve credible intel and a possible weapon that the research facility has created that may be the only way to stop the enemy. This assignment is totally foreign to the crew and they have to adapt rapidly. The jargon used to describe the technical aspects of space and spaceships as well as weaponry and tactics makes the overall story harder to understand for readers unfamiliar with military terms or unwilling to do the extra research. Also expect plenty of soldier talk, profanity, and bathroom humor.
VERDICT This third in Dane’s “Cry Pilot” series (after Burn Cycle) still delivers pulse-pounding action and the satisfying adrenaline rush of a mission complete, but is best read alongside the previous books, which familiarize readers with the characters and the type of work they do.
