A heartfelt love letter to drag queen culture that finds queer Filipino American Rex Araneta trying to help save his college sweetheart, Aaron Berry, save his karaoke bar. Though Rex gave up drag long ago, he now revives his internet-famous drag queen alter ego, Regina Moon Dee, to lend Aaron’s club some pizzazz. In this second-chance romance, Rex chases after the man he thinks of as the one who got away, only to wonder if his real love might be someone entirely different. Adding to the complications is Rex’s struggle to keep his life as Regina secret from his ultra-conservative family. This heartfelt queer romance has a lot of depth as Rex goes on a journey not only for love but self-acceptance within both his family and his wider Filipino American community. The audio is outstanding, read by Filipino American drag queen Manila Luzon, well known as the runner-up in the third season of
RuPaul’s Drag Race. Luzon perfectly captures every moment of the story, from glitz and glam to tender moments.
VERDICT A stellar queer rom-com, highly recommended for fans of Alexis Hall and Casey McQuiston or Andrew Grey’s Dragged to the Wedding.
