Newly widowed, Jenna has moved back to idyllic Crystal Cove, CA, agreeing to co-own a cookbook store with her aunt. Jenna's a bit of a murder magnet; this time a dead body—Natalie Mumford—is found in the alley behind Jenna's shop. Matriarch of a café and not much liked, Natalie had an extensive list of enemies. When a second murder occurs, Jenna must rethink motive. At the same time, Jenna learns that her husband's death—she thought it was a simple drowning accident—was more complicated than she knew. She uncovers disturbing facts about his lifestyle that help her look at the recent murders in a new way. Now if she can only catch the police chief's ear.
VERDICT Gerber's sophomore entry (after Final Sentence) dishes up the gossip with a tendency toward too many characters. That said, a familiar formula (young widow returns to childhood home) works its charm. Readers will relish the extensive cookbook suggestions, the cooking primer, and the whole foodie phenomenon. Gerber's perky tone with a multigenerational cast makes this series a good match for Lorna Barrett ("Booktown Mystery" series) and Nancy J. Parra ("A Baker's Treat" series).
