Psychologist Dunbar (Hate Unleashed: America’s Cataclysmic Change; coeditor, The Psychology of Hate Crimes as Domestic Terrorism: U.S. and Global Issues) arranges 11 contributed chapters from educators, psychologists, and law enforcement and health care researchers to examine aspects of hate speech, hate crimes, terrorism, and the individuals and groups who perpetrate them. Essays cover historical research, current thought and areas for future exploration on bias motivation, in- and out-group influences, demographics of hate speech and hate crime participants, and the possibility that brain chemistry imbalances might play a role in hate-group participation. The chapter on revenge porn, cyber mobs, and creepshots lists helpful resources for victims of cyber hate crimes and all essays include extensive source and reference notes. The authors assume familiarity with research into hate crimes and related topics. Some authors suggest paths forward to lessen hate crimes (see Chap. 11, “Disengagement and Societal Reintegration”), and others share assessments, research, and statistics, without proposing specific remedies.
VERDICT The academic style makes this most suitable for college and graduate school libraries.
