Despite mourning the loss of her longtime friend Sara, New York psychologist Magda is fine—or at least, this is what she tells herself. She relies on her routine, listening to her patients and talking with her colleagues. Then Sara’s widower asks Magda to take possession of Sara’s belongings, including her ashes and correspondence. When Magda begins going through Sara’s journals, she discovers that Sara had been planning a road trip to celebrate Magda’s 70th birthday. Deciding to take the cross-country trip on her own, Magda encounters new and wonderful people and places, from a jazz funeral to a women’s retreat. What she does not anticipate is being forced to face her grief for her lost love and friend, Sara. Cynthia Nixon narrates curmudgeonly Magda with a tenderness and hesitance that perfectly captures her growth. Additionally, Nixon voices Sara’s personality through her letters, allowing the women’s love for each other to shine.
VERDICT Montague’s debut offers an intricate and tender look into grief, self-discovery, and the many complexities of friendship. This sensitive, late-in-life-coming-of-age story satisfies.
