Crawford’s sequel to Jove Brand Is Near Death crashes headlong into superhero-obsessed Hollywood. Neophyte private detective Ken Allen has just cleared himself of murder charges, and his next case has him rubbing shoulders with superheroes and their creators. As a superhero fan, it should have been a dream come true to be so close to the actors, actresses, and everyone who makes these movies. Instead, heroes are dying, productions are being shut down, and the fate of two superhero franchises is in jeopardy. Ken springs into action to clear the name of his friend and gadget guru Ray Ford, stop the machinations of a professional saboteur, and attempt to reconnect with his son. To save the day, Ken will have to step up with his array of gadgets and be like the heroes he idolizes. Narrator Tim Campbell’s voice is pitch-perfect for Allen, who is both super heroic and self-deprecating, basically what would happen if Bruce Wayne built a middling career in Hollywood instead of fighting crime.
VERDICT Fans of both superheroes and pulp noir are sure to love Crawford’s action-packed dialogue and descriptions.
