Former army medic and ex-convict Ten Low keeps a low profile on the desert moon Factus. She lives in an isolated outpost where, in hopes of atoning for her own past sins, she tends to the sick and injured who come to her. Visits from two women bring her out of her isolation. First the general, Gabrielle Ortiz, warns Ten that a new corporation is buying up whole swaths of their moon and forcefully evicting the residents. Ten resists Gabi’s call to arms but then Peccable “Eight” Esterhazy shows Ten a vision that proves Gabi was right to worry. If Ten does nothing, many of her friends will die, so she’s forced into action—which doesn’t bode well for her enemies.
VERDICT Holborn’s blend of gritty Western and science fiction set in the stark landscape of a barren moon is the sequel to Ten Low that fans have been waiting for. Certainly the novel’s centerpiece are its action sequences, but its heart lies in Ten, her ragtag band, and their redemptive and hopeful attempts at survival.
