Hatred is a human emotion that seems to be in abundant supply in the world. While human beings have always had conflict with one another, it seems now that the overall tone of these conflicts spirals into hate much quicker and easier than it ever did before. This is a very timely work that examines the nature of hate and what it can evolve into. Social sciences researcher Cuyvers (Psychopathologie) has created a narrative from an enormous group of primary and scholarly sources, which could, potentially become a textbook for further and future related studies. Perhaps the most valuable part of this title is a historical, vivid, yet easy-to-understand description of several of hate’s worst and most painful manifestations today: armed conflict between nations and genocides. There are also explanations of some methods that have been used in recent conflicts, both personal and multinational, to successfully mediate and then maintain constructive relationships, and, ultimately and one hopes, peace.
VERDICT Recommended for academic libraries, particularly those with psychology or criminology programs.
