Kellerman returns with the latest in his best-selling series (after Victims). A skeleton of an infant, believed to be approximately 60 years old, is found buried in an upscale residential area with only a metal box and a Duesenberg as clues. LAPD detective Milo Sturgis calls in his friend and prominent psychologist Alex Delaware to help him unravel the old mystery as well as to help him figure out if it has any connection to the recent murder of a young woman found in a local park near another, newer, infant skeleton. John Rubenstein reads expertly, alternating between rough-around-the-edges Sturgis and the more thoughtful Delaware. The relationship between the two colleagues and friends is the highlight of the story, while the plot, entertaining in parts, is somewhat lacking in suspense and focus.
VERDICT Still a worthwhile listen for fans and first-timers alike. [The Ballantine hc and the ebook edition were New York Times best sellers.—Ed.]
