Five people cross paths every night in an old cemetery in Rio’s (
If We Were Villains) intense latest. All five work the night shift, so they are awake when most are asleep and are party to a unique view of the world around them. The story is told over a single, harrowing night. When the group discovers a fresh, open grave in a location where no one has been buried for years. They are soon on the path of the gravedigger, who they suspect of causing disturbing events all over town; as they follow his trail, however, they begin to suspect that he may be closer than they ever imagined. The book is narrated by a cast of six, including Jess Nahikain, Max Meyers, Si Chen, and Susan Dalian, who provide an eerie and atmospheric reading. Their collective narration is imbued with a sense of urgency that grows ever more intense as they close in on the gravedigger. Each chapter is told from a different perspective as the novella progresses through the evening.
VERDICT A quick and entirely captivating listen, full of surprises and satisfying character portraits. Though listeners may wish for a more fleshed-out story, they will enjoy this thrilling ride.
