Author and contemporary Christian musician Donehey’s (Finding God’s Life for My Will) book is about learning to disagree in a loving way. Donehey, who acknowledges his privilege as a white Protestant male, nevertheless shares his experiences of what he considers his personal surrender to grace and to seeing the good in others. His faith-filled process reimagines Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In concept by showing how talking less, listening more, and seeking understanding, rather than besting the other in confrontational discourse, can make room for differing views or beliefs that aren’t always black and white, or “gray spaces,” as he calls them. In folksy, self-referential language, and an occasional second person voice, Donehey shares his own process of doing that. The book shows how it led to his seeing the beauty of perspectives outside his own.
VERDICT A gentle, Christian perspective on strength in weakness and authenticity in the gray spaces.
