Smith’s (
The Unsinkable Greta James) newest is a bittersweet story about finding one’s purpose. The Endicotts have grown up with an itinerant mother who chooses to follow her acting dreams. Frankie abandons her children—leaving them alone for most of the year—only to come back each summer to take them on a road trip. When her mother is absent, Gemma, the oldest of the children, bears the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings. That was the family myth, anyway. Connor, the writer of the family, even wrote an award-winning novel loosely based on his dysfunctional yet tight-knit family. Connor’s book and its success, however, creates problems for the once-close siblings, as Gemma, Jude, and Roddy feel betrayed by Connor’s spilling of truths. Jude, a successful actress who feels burdened by a secret, urges her family to take one more road trip to a small town in North Dakota. Though she hopes everyone can resolve their differences, the secrets she shares will shake everyone to their core.
VERDICT Smith’s novel, which moves back and forth in time, asks serious questions about chasing one’s dreams and how that may impinge upon family responsibilities.
