Brubaker (“Reckless” series) and team have crafted a compelling post-YA detective narrative reminiscent of The Hardy Boys, combined with cosmic horror. This first collected volume of the Friday Fitzhugh saga introduces us to our tough, quick-witted protagonist and her best friend Lancelot Jones. We meet Friday as she grapples with being on the cusp of adulthood while caught in the shadow of her brilliant partner in busting crime. Martin and Muntsa’s illustrations and color are vibrant and breathtaking, in a way that almost perfectly encompasses the 1970s New England setting.
VERDICT A beautiful and dark homage to the classic “child sleuth” character, crossed with the Sunday funnies page. It’s funny, brutal, and most of all riveting in a way that feels at once nostalgic and frightening. This collection is enticing from page one and becomes nearly impossible to put down once opened.
