Authors of
Elton John, All the Songs, Roubin and Olivier turn their attention to long-enduring rock group Fleetwood Mac. The band first formed in 1967 during the mid-1960s British blues boom. Guitarist/singer Peter Green named the band by combining the names of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. Green left the band in 1970, and McVie’s wife, Christine McVie, joined. In 1974, Americans Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined. Through chart-topping 1970s albums and singles, up to the band’s recent tours, Roubin and Olivier address each song and its personnel, genesis, lyrics, and production. Readers will be captivated by sections like the one detailing the 15 different lineups of Fleetwood Mac over the years. Glimpses into the various personalities and their interactions, successes, and periodic travails create a vivid impression, while bountiful illustrations, many in color, alongside tidbits “for Mac Addicts” add immediacy. A glossary, extensive discography/bibliography, and index are included.
VERDICT All music aficionados, not just Fleetwood Mac fans, will appreciate this traversal of an iconic group’s output and influence. It’s a fine encyclopedic complement to Mark Blake’s Dreams.
