Journalist Esther Hoffman, already convinced that Dr. Jennifer Webb is a charlatan, visits her therapy center, which has pioneered a new form of virtual reality (VR) therapy. The treatment places patients into simulated high-stress scenarios to help them overcome issues by making new (albeit false) memories to rewrite old destructive patterns. Esther agrees to enter one of Webb's VR scenarios to report on the techniques being used, but her session goes horribly awry when a corporate spy targets the center. Now both Esther and Webb are trapped in this digital realm, and they will have to work together if they want to survive. The book's title refers to the common trope of horror films in which one final surviving girl is left to confront the killer, and that is just one clever nod that shows Grant's familiarity with—and willingness to subvert—the expectations of the genre.
VERDICT Grant ("Newsflesh" series) packs a lot of action and terrifying thrills into a slender novella. [Grant also writes urban fantasies as Seanan McGuire; see Down Among the Sticks and Bones, reviewed in this column.—Ed.]
