Upon meeting in a bar one night, Elsie and Jimmy are immediately attracted to each other, but there’s a hitch—she’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf. After listing the pros and cons of either sucking his blood or dating him, Elsie follows her heart and the two become involved. Cartoonist Andersen (Cheshire Crossing) presents the ensuing romance in a series of charming and—despite the supernatural context—relatable vignettes. The two share memories of past lovers (after Jimmy inquires what she did after being cheated on by a former lover, Elise asks, “With his body?”) and swap gruesome tales of past exploits. Their romance isn’t without minor annoyances and missteps, as when Jimmy nearly kills Elsie by throwing open a curtain to let the sunshine in or Elsie’s occasionally overwhelming bloodlust, but before long the pair declare undying love for each other…literally, in Elsie’s case.
VERDICT Andersen’s knack for macabre banter and focus on how intimacy is established through an aggregate of grandly romantic moments and relatively mundane exchanges result in a funny, sweet volume about two uncommonly endearing supernatural predators.
