Physician Micah Greyson returns home to Savannah, GA, from Pennsylvania only to find that the life he once knew no longer suits him. Having learned much about the abolitionist movement while up north, his sympathies have changed. He is reunited with a childhood crush when Keziah Montgomery suffers an epileptic seizure. Their renewed friendship introduces Keziah to the secret work of the Underground Railroad, in which the path to freedom is not easy nor safe in a country about to be torn apart by civil war. When Micah heads back north, Keziah wonders if she will ever see him again.
VERDICT Debut novelist Johnson does not shy away from the horrors of slavery and the important role of the Underground Railroad, but the tone of this historical romance is much lighter than expected. Still, fans of the genre will be pleased.
